Whether you are a Hollywood buff or not, if you are following the news, or even remotely exist on social media, you must have heard of Heard and her trial in the defamation case! The Johnny Depp versus Amber Heard defamation case has been making the headline before the matters even took to the court. And now that the trial is at its peak, people on the internet have gone into a frenzy, debating, commenting, and analyzing the fall of the couple.
As both the celebrities and their learned team of lawyers try to defend their reputation before the world, there is a more pressing question that needs to be answered: who is the real victim here?
The ex-celebrity couple had split up in 2016, but their rather troubling conflict started to unwind in front of the world in 2018 when Amber wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post where she wrote about surviving domestic violence without mentioning Johnny Depp.
“I became a public figure representing domestic abuse, and I felt the full force of our culture’s wrath for women who speak out.”-Amber Heard
This statement was followed by much controversy in the press and the audience, costing Johnny unimaginable damage to his career and not to mention his reputation. Depp has been dissed out of the sixth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbeans by Disney and
Johnny’s $50 million defamation case was not just retaliation, but an attempt to defend his honour and retain his respect in public. But the shocker came when Johnny didn’t just deny his charges against him but shared several pieces of evidence to prove “he” was the recipient of domestic violence.
Now, the first question that comes to our mind is, why didn’t Amber report the abuse if it were true, and if not, why did Johnny wait until Amber published her op-ed?
Let’s try to reason their moves:
- Both Amber and Depp have been subjected to and witnessed domestic violence as children
- Surviving children of domestic violence often hold on to trauma and tentatively ignore red flags and toxic behaviours
- Often times abused adults resort to substance abuse or alcoholism to escape from confronting their feelings
- The childhood trauma of feeling helpless renders the subject incapable as an adult to speak up against the violence.
Thus, we need to understand that it is not just defamation that Johnny and Amber are fighting against, but a deeper issue with very long-lasting and emotionally taxing effects.
As their legal teams attempted to defend their respective clients, shocking revelations, statements and evidence were revealed to the court and, not to mention, the public.
As much as the abuse towards Jhonny and the defecation on the bed has been established and definitely favours the case towards Johnny, we cannot ignore the fact that there were signs of toxicity including substance abuse from the heartthrob himself.
On the other hand, there are clear audio clips putting Amber in the corner.
While it is hard to side with or even sympathize with Amber, we have to admit that there are more grey areas than the press or social media can spot and clarify. In the end, it is another case of a toxic relationship that reveals the ugly face of domestic abuse and how even global celebrities are not immune.
No matter who wins the case, it is undeniable that both parties have and will continue to suffer irrevocable damage. In the end, all we can learn from the publicized trial is to call the cuts on toxic behaviour before it blows out of proportion causing physical and mental pain for the longest run.
