In the last 20 days of the ongoing Russia Ukraine war, many shockers have hit the media headlines. But one of the recent revelations that have put the world on alert and agitated Fox News & the U.S. right is the possibility of the U.S. developing Biological Weapons in Ukraine.
In a press release on 8th March 2022, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that “We [Russia] confirm that, during the special military operation in Ukraine, the Kiev regime was found to have been concealing traces of a military biological program implemented with funding from the United States Department of Defense.”
This has caused a fierce row in the media and politics putting Washington and Ukraine in a rather controversial position. Today, we will attempt to get to the bottom of this. But before that, let’s explore and understand the root of the controversy.
Why is it a big deal?
The story begins at BTWC, The Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention that was the first multilateral treaty categorically banning a class of weapons. This treaty bans the development, accumulation, production, or transfer of biological agents and toxins of “types and quantities” that have no justification for protective or peaceful use.
The treaty also states that “should a state possess any agent, toxin, or delivery system for them, they have nine months from entry into force of the treaty to destroy their stockpiles, or divert them for peaceful use”.
This puts both, The USA and Ukraine in a rather uncomfortable position if the allegations brought by Russian authorities turn out to be true.
What’s the U.S.’ take on this?
While the U.S. has admitted that there are several biological facilities in Ukraine funded by Washington, they denounced any claims that they are engaged in the development of biological or chemical weapons.
According to US authorities, the Ukrainian labs indeed conduct research on deadly pathogens, although from a preventative perspective rather than to create a weapon. The US has also claimed that these assertions by Russia are a cover, should it decide to launch chemical or biological weapons in the war itself.
“Now that Russia has made these false claims, and China has seemingly endorsed this propaganda, we should all be on the lookout for Russia to possibly use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or to create a false flag operation using them,” tweeted Jen Psaki, the White House Press Secretary.
But these explanations have not entirely immuned the United States or the Ukrainian government from scrutiny and questioning.
The doubts were further raised when Fox News Reporter Tom Tucker, allegedly implied that the truth of the bio labs may have a more sinister side to them than the USA is ready to admit.
The indications are further emphasized after Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congressman, posted a two-minute video calling for a ceasefire in Ukraine to enable any harmful materials to be removed and accusing the Biden administration of a cover-up.
While the documentation on the urgent eradication of highly hazardous pathogens is being analysed by Russian experts, we can only hope that none of the pathogens gets misplaced or mishandled in the meanwhile.
